In 1992, Doctors Edward Stephens
and Ona Robinson founded The On Step Institute for
Mental Health Research, a non-profit organization
dedicated to finding a new way for people to achieve the
harmonious adaptation of differences called concinnity.
Concinnity develops after the role of competitive forces, so
prevalent in today's complex world, are explored, and at times,
altered.
These competitive forces,
embedded in a highly competitive culture such as ours, make
connections with others hard to maintain. Loyalties,
allegiances, faithfulness, commitment become more rare. The
social contracts, the ways in which human beings tacitly agree
to conduct themselves with one another, become fragile and even
break. As a result, many people suffer from increasing isolation
and loneliness.
Research grounded in the
integration of current psychological literature and the hands on
experience of people in everyday life, leads to new ideas and
exciting possibilities. Couples, families, businesses, and even
governments can achieve a real joining, the harmony promised in
concinnity. This is the vision and the
direction of OSI, The On Step Institute for Mental
Health Research.
